Students and Registration staff now have the ability to add a preferred name to a student record for use in the classroom and in Canvas instead of the official name on the student’s record. It’s easy and can be accomplished in two ways:
1. Registration staff can manually add to the student’s record in our student management database. Students must stop by our office to make this request in person.
2. Students can add their preferred name using the student portal. Access is through the My South link and the Student Profile update looks like this:
Once a preferred name is entered, it appears on class rosters in Instructor Briefcase (noted with parenthesis) and in the Canvas teaching platform. The preferred name becomes part of the student record, IBC and Canvas as soon the information is entered in the database.
